Kalibo's Ati-atihan Festival 2014

Viva Sr. Santo Ninyo!!!

As soon as the priest said "Viva Sr. Santo Ninyo" and the crowd replies "Viva", drums started rolling and people started lifting their Sto. Ninyo above their heads. And the Ati-atihan Festival began.

The high mass started around 7am at Kalibo's Cathedral where the crowd gathered outside the church. It was an English mass mixed with a little of Aklanon language.

As the Ati-atihan began, the crowd gave way for the parade of ati's from the different barangay's of Kalibo. And with the little space, people started to dance to the beat along with the ati's at the same time taking pictures. One thing I loved about Kalibo's Original version of Ati-atihan is that it's spontaneous and the people are free spirited. The people were all over the streets of Kalibo enjoying the parade and drinking beer at the same time.

The weather was cold and a little sunny which made the whole ati-atihan experience a lot better.

The parade ended at around 11am and we were all hungry. All the fastfood chains were packed with people so if you didn't bring your own lunch, you'd find yourself falling in line for 30min or so. The good thing is that we've packed our lunch ahead of time and left it inside the van.

Hats, sunglasses and a bottled water is a must bring so you won't end up dehydrated at the end of the day.

So far, our first ati-atihan experience was a blast. Thanks to Mommy Liza for inviting us!

The succeeding photos will show how much fun we had during the ati-atihan.
